Virgin Birth of Jesus
-- By Les Dennis
Why is the virgin birth of Jesus so important? Why do we evangelicals use it as a litmus test for new Bible versions? Why is it used to help distinguish between conservative Christians and liberals?
We believe the virgin birth is vital because so much truth rests upon it. If Jesus Christ were not born of a virgin, He would have had the same sin nature that the rest of us have. He would be only a man. He could not be God in the flesh. If God came in the flesh by taking over a body that was conceived the usual way through a human sexual relationship, the body would already have a new human soul just like any newborn would have, and the Lord would have either had to suppress the already existing human soul or put it to death in order to take over the body.
Why is it thought so remarkable that God would cause His Son to be born of a virgin? After all he created the universe and mankind to begin with, so using Mary’s DNA to produce a baby within her so that Jesus could enter the human race would not be a hard thing for God. God created the biological laws that says a man and woman must come together to produce a baby. So God can make an exception if he so chooses, which He did in the birth of Jesus. Mere men can clone a sheep, so why is such a big step to think the one who created sheep and mankind would cause a woman, Mary, to have a virgin-born baby. We believe Matthew when he quotes Isaiah 7:14.
"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us." (Matthew 1:23)
Truly, Jesus is God with us, and it was made possible because God brought about a virgin birth in the person of Jesus.
